The Concept of Age

Iris Apfel's previous campaign for Coach

The rare bird of fashion, style icon Iris Apfel is rather busy in the fashion world lately. At 90 years old, she just launched her jewellery line and now is modelling for MAC.  She is the role model of “anti-aging”. In a recent interview with Dazed Digital, Iris Apfel gave her advices on how to age gracefully.

I think Chanel said, “Nothing makes a woman look old that a woman trying to look young.” Dress appropriately and do your makeup appropriately and be yourself  and you can look very chic. You can look beautiful at any age.

In fact there are more women think is the same way.  JWT Intelligence just released a study with 1,055 adults in the U.K. and the U.S. The statistics seems to be showing that there is a generally positive perception towards aging, especially among women. I can foresee this new attitude will open up a lot of business opportunities as the lifestyle choices of the aging population will not be the same as before. But for me, a more important takeout from this survey is that we seems to be ready for a longer life span.

In the TEDxHK in last December, I heard a speech from Dr. Aubrey de Grey from SENS Foundation. He is a biomedical gerontologist, the Editor-in-Chief of academic journal Rejuvenation Research, author of The Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging (1999) and co-author of Ending Aging (2007). He see aging as a disease and it can be cured. In his speech, he mentioned that metabolism leads to seven kinds of cell damage, and each of which can be averted. He even claimed that human can live to 1,000 years old!

The concept of stopping aging reminds me of Justin Timberlake’s sci fi film In Time last year. In that film everyone stop aging at 25. But instead, time is used as currency. I wonder how would it be if we have a life span that almost equal to eternity. Of course it’s still a remote idea for us to live for 1,000 years, but I think it is a perfect time to reconsider the concept of age, and aging.
